Katarina String Quartet

The Katarina String Quartet was founded in 2022 at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, under the direction of André Roy. Since then, Jeanel Liang (violin), Jérôme Chiasson (violin), Celia Morin (viola), and Maya Enstad (cello) have collaborated extensively with members of the Juilliard String Quartet, the Alban Berg Quartet, the Danel Quartet, the Dover Quartet, and the Pacifica Quartet, and have participated in programs such as the IMS Prussia Cove and the McGill International String Quartet Academy. The Katarina String Quartet served as the Graduate Resident String Quartet at The Juilliard School from 2024 to 2026 and is currently the “Quartet in Residence” at the New England Conservatory.
The quartet is supported by the Nederlandse Strijkkwartet Academie and performs regularly in the Netherlands. The ensemble’s 2026–27 season includes performances in Europe, Canada, and the United States. Previously, the ensemble has performed at Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, “Chamber Music Detroit,” the University of Notre Dame, and the “Dame Myra Hess Concerts,” among other venues. The string quartet is also Artist in Residence at the Avaloch Farm Institute.
As a recipient of the Juilliard Gluck Fellowship, the ensemble regularly performs at community centers throughout New York City, addressing social issues such as food waste and food security—including through performances in the “Music for Food” concert series.
The Katarina String Quartet is a multiple prize winner at international competitions. In 2024, it won the gold medal and the BIPOC Composer Prize at the St. Paul Chamber Music Competition. In 2025, it won the Grand Prize at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition and the CAG Louis and Susan Meisel Prize, as well as the ProQuartet Prize and the Drimnin String Quartet Academy Prize at the Wigmore Hall String Quartet Competition.
The quartet’s name honors the violin maker Katarina Guarneri, wife of the violin maker Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù.
At the 75th ARD International Music Competition, the Katarina String Quartet won third prize in the string quartet category.
